So for the past several months there has been construction going on at 4730 Vernon Blvd, No one knew exactly what was going on in there, other then it was a restaurant, Well i think its about time everyone got a peak inside. Testaccio - will be a high end Italian Restaurant focusing on dishes from Rome. Owners Carlo & Paul Bardone along with long time friend Alviero Pirani have partnered with Chef Ivan Beacco - Former Head Chef of Borgo Antico - and have retained the design firm Dizon Collective, to take on this project, mixing both rustic and modern elements, on three levels, seating over 100 people, featuring Brick Oven Pizza, where the Brick Oven was recently shipped to NY from Rome. “This is just what LIC needs, a taste of Manhattan” says the two brothers and owners of the restaurant. The restaurant is scheduled to be open sometime in late August or Early September, But Long Island City will be able to get its first taste of Testaccio in the Taste of LIC Happening Tuesday June 9th at the Gantry Plaza - Begining at 6:30pm, Gift certificates will be raffled off…

A while back the city announced that they were moving forward with the Jackson Avenue Beautification project. Jackson Avenue would have these beautiful deviders with Trees, plants & sculptures similar to Park Avenue, the sidewalks would be wider, more trees and pathways would be added in addition to bikelanes, benches and Street Lights, making Jackson Avenue more pedestrian friendly. Well that time has come, things are really picking up and you can now see the changes occuring, i walk to work everyday and i see a new devider being installed or sidewalks being expanded. Along the Court Square area, they have already expanded some parts of the sidewalks by about 2 feet, a new island has been created near Citi Bank and Sovereign Bank, walk up Jackson Avenue and you will see around 30-40 new bases for street lights, they have also started created sidewalk islands for trees as well as a new bus stop along Jackson & Court Square, The deviders are quite nice, there are already three in progress with a couple that is already filled with soil, the first one ironically was constructed along the block of Dutch Kills, (wonder if Sasha had any pull with the city) They have also added an island and trees along the Pulaski Bridge, this along with the 1.5 acre park in Queens Plaza is really changing the profile of this part of town. completion is scheduled to be complete by September 2010… But it looks like the Court Square and Jackson Avenue is about to give Hunters Point a run for there money…

Parking Permit Clampdown

parking permitThis weekend, the NY Times ran a story on parking permits and the Mayor’s plan to reduce by 20% the number of permits given to city employees - police officers, firefighters, teachers and other city employees. As you can imagine, those drivers who work in jobs that traditionally have had parking permits as part of the employment package are not happy with this plan. These jobs are not the highest paying jobs, especially compared to salaries in the private sector, so the parking permit softens the blow a bit.

This, in part, encourages people to continue to have cars, and cars will continue to be a problem as NYC gets more and more populated. Where are all these cars going to go? Thank goodness new developments provide some off-street parking spaces (though at a price).

For a year, I worked as a parking appeals officer. I read appeals people wrote regarding parking tickets they were given. My boss used to say that parking was the great equalizer on campus - it didn’t matter if you were a student, staff, or faculty - you were each given a parking permit and had to abide by its rules.

A lot of people felt they were above the rules and would park wherever they wanted to. And when they got a ticket, it pissed them off sometimes. I was once left a message from an angry woman who said that God was going to strike me down because she had been issued a parking ticket.

One of the things that I had no tolerance for was abuse of placards, disabled placards in this case. Some of these people felt that they could just borrow grandma’s disabled placard, or park in front of a fire hydrant regardless, so this part of the Times article really struck a nerve:

When the city announced plans to crack down on the abuse of parking permits issued to city employees, Christopher Stephens felt a shiver of furious recognition.

He once oversaw parking permit violation cases as an administrative law judge in the city. One day, in Queens, a woman seeking to nullify her parking ticket confidently claimed breathtaking powers for her Fire Department placard.

Are you a Fire Department employee? Judge Stephens asked. No, she replied, but my father is a retired fire chief. “No way is that legitimate! No way!” Mr. Stephens, 39, now a lawyer for the city, said on Friday. “She is not a Fire Department employee, her father is no longer a Fire Department employee, the vehicle does not belong to the Fire Department, and the vehicle was not being used for Fire Department business.” He ruled against her.

I say, right on! It seriously irks me that people feel that they can flaunt the rules like this.

The placard cuts start March 1. It will be interesting to see if this affects the future parking situation in any way, and I’ll be curious to see how much backlash comes out of it.

Willets Point Land Grab on Hold, Yet others get there cash!

The Iron Triangle

Ok so i have a little inside scoop on whats the deal with Willets Point. So a while back the city was sitting with land owners on an individual basis, they were offering anywhere from $184 - $220 a sqft and that they have had deals as high as $230 a sqft. About 4 months ago, the city stopped returning calls to the landowners that they havent settled yet, then all of a sudden 2-3 weeks ago, those owners got calls letting them know that the city has stopped negotiating for now as the economy isnt great and will resume in a year or so, but that the owner can do whatever he wishes with that land, i.e. sell or whatever. To make things even more confusing is that the city has already paid some of the landowners a portion of the money and that they can keep it no matter what! whether the city proceeds or not, yet still allowing them to stay.

In the meantime there are rumors that the city has already rezoned the area… Whats to come of the City’s Iron Triangle? Stay Tuned!!!

LIC Bar

45-58 Vernon Blvd
Long Island City, NY
718-786-5400

LIC Bar is a classic New York City watering hole in the hottest neighborhood in Queens. You’ll find the bar’s 100-year-old history – an antique wood bar, original tin ceilings, brick walls – paired with a beautiful outdoor garden and a great friendly crowd – only one subway stop from Manhattan. Call it an oasis of authentic New York in the midst of gleaming new condo towers and a fantastic Manhattan view.

The vibe at LIC Bar is casual and cool–no trademarked cocktails here, but plenty of choice if you favor draft beer, single-malt scotch, or a well-mixed drink. Your whole crew can rendezvous after a day of work or an afternoon at PS 1, and find seats at the long bar and big tables. Or head outdoors to the garden to sit in the shade under our willow trees on a sunny afternoon, or warm up under the heat lamps on a chilly night.
