Jewel Avenue Improvements in Fresh Meadows

This weekend, the NY Times ran an article about Jewel Avenue in Fresh Meadows. A four block length of the avenue has received some improvements in the last couple of weeks: preparation for speed bumps, extra stop signs, and room for more bikes, facilitated by the removal of one lane of traffic in each direction.

Why have these improvements been implemented? A teacher from nearby P.S. 200 was killed last December at the intersection of Jewel Avenue and 164th Street. This lead to parents asking the city to make the intersection safer, an intersection that has seen many accidents and near-misses. However, some residents are quite resistant to the improvement plans. They cited the example that buses picking up kids would contribute to backing up traffic.

Maura McCarthy, the Queens borough commissioner of the Transportation Department, sums it up the reasons for the changes this way:

“You must understand, that when a school community such as that of P.S. 200 approaches the department with a petition signed by nearly 150 parents and others proclaiming that ‘Our Children Are in Danger,’ we have no choice but to act.”
