 Changes at the Progressive Southside

This week we got the news that Kel at the Progressive Southside … is moving back to Brooklyn! Aw, Kel, we’ll miss you here in Queens. I’m sorry to see you go.

Kel hopes that someone will take over the blog after he leaves:

We’re concerned about this blog’s future. We’re desperately looking for a person or two who understand the position and the purpose for this blog. That’s the hard part. Many eyeballs reading the logs, but we don’t know if anyone believes in actually take over. If you live in South Jamaica, Rochdale Village or Springfield Gardens and you can see yourself reporting on the positive and interesting things of this community, please contact us at progressivesouthside@nycmail.com. This is not “our” blog. This is OUR BLOG. Do you know what we mean? We’ve planted the seed, but you added sun and water to make it grow.

October 31st is our last day. Don’t let the tree die.

I hope someone will step up and take the reigns at The Progressive Southside. That blog is incredibly valuable and gives the area a much needed voice. Give Kel a holler if you want to help out.

More on Springfield Gardens Overdevelopment

Kel at The Progressive Southside brings us an illustrated tour and update of the new developments over by Railroad Park near the Locust Manor LIRR station:

A tiny new community of new homes now exists just north of the Locust Manor Railroad Station. United Homes erected several two family homes that were built over the past several months. New roads were recently tar paved. 132nd Avenue and 133rd Avenue were extended to meet with Garrett Street, also a street extension. Originally, Garrett Street started south of Railroad Park.

Check out his post, he has a lot of pictures illustrating what has happened over there.

Questionable Construction in Railroad Park in Springfield Gardens

Some residents near 133rd Avenue in Springfield Gardens claim that new condo construction is going on in Railroad Park. The Parks Department says not so, but long time residents disagree. One woman said that a Railroad Park sign was at end of the block, but it’s been removed and replaced by construction sheds and building permits. “Come on, I know where the park starts, I’ve lived here,” she said. “We’ve been walking our dogs, cats, whatever down there from time immemorial.”

Residents are also worried about a new road - connecting 132nd and 133rd Avenues to 176th Street - that’s being built by these condo developers. This could potentially create a shortcut for drivers heading toward Farmers Boulevard. Excessive and fast traffic is the concern. What really sucks is that area residents, at a 2004 meeting, were promised that 133rd Avenue would be converted to a cul-de-sac, not a through street.
