Maspeth’s St. Saviour’s Before and After Photos

Curbed ran a post today about St. Saviour’s in Maspeth, the site of one of Queens’ most intense preservation battles. The before and after pictures of St. Saviour’s are pretty striking, and it’s pretty sad to see all those trees just gone. The post itself is informative, but once again the comments degrade to babble, insults, and racist spew. I recommend you ignore the comments and focus on the content by Curbed readers, unless you want to read something pointlessly unpleasant. I know Curbed writers do a good job on their end, and are not responsible for the comments, but it really sucks a lot of the legitimacy out of that site. I like the Curbed site and am thankful for my RSS reader so I can ignore the comments!

Those pictures are horrifying! I drive past that site once and awhile and the last thing it needs is to lose those trees…guess it’s too late for th trees, but let’s hope the developer doesn’t get to put some crappy housing.

I think the fear is that they’ll tear the two structures down and put up boxy, non-descript housing. I know there have been rallies to save the property and the trees, but it looks like they haven’t been effective enough. My impression is that these rallies and protests aren’t taken seriously by the people they’re aiming their message at. Not sure what kinds of changes in approach need to be made, but something has to alter in the way the protesters take their message to the appropriate folks. I always get the impression that they go in expecting to lose. Not good.
