Questionable Construction in Railroad Park in Springfield Gardens
Some residents near 133rd Avenue in Springfield Gardens claim that new condo construction is going on in Railroad Park. The Parks Department says not so, but long time residents disagree. One woman said that a Railroad Park sign was at end of the block, but it’s been removed and replaced by construction sheds and building permits. “Come on, I know where the park starts, I’ve lived here,” she said. “We’ve been walking our dogs, cats, whatever down there from time immemorial.”
Residents are also worried about a new road - connecting 132nd and 133rd Avenues to 176th Street - that’s being built by these condo developers. This could potentially create a shortcut for drivers heading toward Farmers Boulevard. Excessive and fast traffic is the concern. What really sucks is that area residents, at a 2004 meeting, were promised that 133rd Avenue would be converted to a cul-de-sac, not a through street.
