Rego Park - Home to Queens’ First Trader Joes

They’ve been talking about this for months over on Chowhound, how Trader Joes is going to open up in Rego Park. Well, TJs is one of the three confirmed tenants of the mall development, the others being Michaels and Staples. Michaels and Staples will for sure be opening in Fall 2007, but Trader Joes keeps pushing their opening date back, to the consternation of many fans in the borough. Apparently it’s supposed to be in there by the end of the year, but I wouldn’t count on it.  Whenever it does open, I’m sure it will be a very popular destination.

This development is at 90-30 Metropolitan Avenue in Rego Park.

Can anyone enlighten me as to why Michaels is a popular store?

Who goes there…and why? I just can’t figure it out. They’re everywhere and I don’t know why.

I think people like to be crafty, especially women. They also sell a lot of cake decorating supplies; I bought a great offset spatula there which is perfect for icing cupcakes (I love cupcakes!). There’s also cheap yarn, which is great for those who knit or crochet. They have a ton of other things for all your crafting needs.

I remember reading that knitting was revived shortly after 9-11 and became hugely popular, because it’s a comforting, familiar, stable activity. I wonder if crafting is similar.

Coming soon sign is up. Finally listed on the TJ site as “coming soon.” Advertising on TJ site for employees. I would guess by September or October!

I think it’s great that TJs is coming to Queens. Just wish it was more convenient via subway, though I know the bus goes there. I hope it won’t be as nuts as the Union Square location, too.

just a FYI the location is in forest hills, not rego park. quite far from rego, in fact! just so no one gets lost/confused…

and michaels is good for hobbists, kids, artists, designers, etc.
