The Greening of Jackson Avenue
Jackson Avenue in Long Island City is set to have its own extreme makeover, and the changes sounds like good ones: new trees and lighting, and a more pedestrian-friendly street. The city met a couple weeks ago with CB2’s Land Use Committee to discuss their draft plan to overhaul a half dozen or so of blocks of Jackson Avenue (21st Street to Queens Plaza). In the words of the Chairperson Lisa Deller, the aim is “to make Jackson Avenue a more attractive boulevard than it is now.” This draft plan will most likely be on the June CB2 agenda for discussion. With all the new develoment in LIC and influx of people, it just makes sense to improve a major street such as Jackson Ave. And this comes at a time when considerations regarding Queensboro Plaza are in the air (and hopefully in the works). It’s all connected.

I guess what I don’t understand is why it isn’t going to run all the way to Vernon?

Not sure, r185, but that’s a good question. Perhaps 21st Street to Venon will be a phase two kind of thing? Maybe they didn’t have enough money? Maybe resistance from business owners there? I’ll look into it.
