When Blogs Collide: OuterB and Queens Central
Yesterday I wrote an OpEd called Queens and Hipness, a response to a blog post over at Queens Central. Now, there has been a response to my response! Check it out. The subject of hipsters, coolness, and suburbs vs. city feel comes up from time to time. Some even think Astoria is somewhat suburban (I disagee)!
I think, when it gets right down to it, it’s often perspective that determines the preceived level of urbanness in a particular part of the world (although it’s obvious that Midtown Manhattan is a bustling urban center). I used to think Stony Brook was just a way-too-far-from-the-city part of Long Island, really suburban. My landlord’s assistant at his job thought that part of the world was rural (!). Coming home after a day on the east end of the North Fork, Stony Brook seemed like a bustling little town. And when I visited SF the first time after moving to NY (and having spent time in Manhattan), I thought the pace in the Bay Area was so slow. I like Astoria because it moves a little slower than its neighbor, Midtown Manhattan.
Thanks, for reading, Steve at Queens Central!
